Snow & Fun Sports
Every winter try something new!
The following sports or techniques are now offered in many ski schools throughout the SalzburgerLand:
Back country, snow kiting, ice climbing, freestyle, guided ski tours, snowshoe hikes, ski safaris, snowbiking, snowrafting, snowsailing, winter canyoning, snowtubing, winter Nordic Walking and zorbing.
Sports on Ice
Sports on ice also offer extraordinary wintertime experiences. Perhaps ice skating on one of our lakes, or on a rink in time to the music, or perhaps while taking part in a traditional game of ice stock (an alpine variant on curling). Braver souls might test their mettle on frozen waterfalls, or maybe even dive below the water’s icy surface!
One thing is certain: after playing sports out on the ice, there’s nothing that warms your cockles better than a glass of hot mulled wine or “Hunt Tea”.
Ice Skating in Salzburg and the SalzburgerLand
Ice skating on the lakes of the SalzburgerLand – an experience that is truly beyond compare! Be that out on the Wolfgangsee, Wallersee, Fuschlsee, or perhaps on the Goldeggersee or Zeller See. And always in the midst of the mountains of this snow-covered winter wonderland.
Numerous ice rinks offer even more variety and fun as they feature floodlit rinks and ice discos.
It’s hard to imagine a more impressive backdrop than that of the ice rink on Mozart Square in Salzburg City! Just imagine, clocking your laps enveloped in the wintertime atmosphere of Salzburg.
Sleigh Rides – Nostalgia & Romance
There is no more quiet or magical delight than settling down in a horse-drawn sleigh, wrapping yourself up in warm blankets and being chauffeured through glorious winter landscapes. Combined with a stop-off at a friendly country inn, your sleigh ride becomes an outing filled with a perfect blend of romance and convivial good times.
Winter Hiking in the SalzburgerLand
Gaze in awe at magnificent winter landscapes, breathe in the clear winter’s air and savor the tranquility – you can do all of that as you head out on a winter’s hike through the SalzburgerLand. Virtually wherever you go in the SalzburgerLand, winter hiking paths have been cleared away so that you can enjoy extended hikes either away from, or parallel to the ski slopes themselves.
A walk in the fresh air and snowy alpine world can awaken so many feelings of happiness.
In almost all SalzburgerLand communities, visitors can take part in guided snowshoe hikes and explore unique winter hiking paths that are just waiting to be discovered by you.
Sledding – Slicing through the Snow
The sled is one of the oldest pieces of winter sports equipment in the Alps – quite simply, it’s a classic.
To this very day, it is a source of whole-hearted good fun for young and old, gliding along down specially created hills or already existing paths, to the SalzburgerLand’s valleys far below.
Many sledding hills are also floodlit. If you prefer a more romantic experience, however, you might opt to sled by the light of a lantern or torch, or simply illuminated by shafts of moonlight.
Cross-Country Skiing in the SalzburgerLand, 2000 km of trails
Cross-country skiing really is a wonderful thing – ideal no matter what your age, no matter what your condition.
Anyone who has ever pushed their way through a glistening winter forest accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of their own cross-country motions and breathing in that crisp, clear air, understands that cross-country does something magical for mind, body and soul.
The SalzburgerLand’s network of cross-country trails is more than 2,000 km long, thus surpassing the entire length of the state’s downhill slopes!
Ski-Touring in the Weisssee Glacier World, Salzburg
The secluded tranquility on the mountain, the ascent to loftier elevations, the moment when you have reached the summit and the world literally lies at your feet – a feeling that can barely, if at all, be described in words.
The SalzburgerLand, and especially the Weisssee Glacier World near Uttendorf, has developed in recent years into a true ski-touring paradise for special moments such as these.
