Summer Vacations in the SalzburgerLand – Summertime Sports
Hiking Vacations in the SalzburgerLand – Summer Hiking Adventures
The SalzburgerLand’s hikers prize the abundance of extraordinary landscapes. The gentle hill country that surrounds the lakes in the north, the interplay of friendly grass-topped mountains, rugged crags and picturesque alpine lakes to the south.
The people who live here in the SalzburgerLand also understand how valuable these unique landscapes truly are. More than 10% of the SalzburgerLand is part of the Hohe Tauern National Park, the biggest national park in all of Austria. In fact, 30% of the state’s total land area is protected.
So as to better sustain the vulnerable eco-system of this mountain world, cars are banned from many of the side valleys. Instead, these valleys are serviced by public buses or hiking shuttles.
Cycling & Mountain Biking in the SalzburgerLand
Pedaling from village to village, skirting the water’s edge, the countryside slowly passing you by. Or leaning into those pedals with all your energy and conquering the mountain.
Salzburg’s network of cycle paths and mountain-bike trails extends out for some 4500 kilometers.
For families and more casual cyclists, we heartily recommend the Tauern Cycle Path, as well as the newly created Mozart Bike Trail.
Tip: The Tauern Cycle Path is 280 km in length. It runs from the Krimml Waterfalls to Salzburg City, and via the Salzach Valley back to Zell am See!
Swimming Lakes in the SalzburgerLand
185 lakes adorn the countryside – in the neighboring Salzkammergut, in mountain valleys, amid the high peaks. The summer sun turns many of these into fun-filled hives of activity – perfect for anyone who can’t wait a second longer to have fun in and around the water.
The SalzburgerLand’s lakes all have one thing in common: the quality of their waters is quite exceptional!
In addition to its natural lakes, the SalzburgerLand’s more than 20 man-made lake resorts and over 60 open-air pools invite one and all to enjoy a refreshing dip.
Adventure slides and kiddie pools at the outdoor swimming pools ensure that this will be a day of endless fun, especially for the youngsters!
Sailing & Surfing
Eleven lakes invite visitors to indulge their love of sailing and windsurfing, with each one having something unique and special to offer. From our biggest and deepest lake, the Wolfgangsee (with Austria’s oldest yacht club), to the Flachgau Lake District with the warm waters of the Wallersee and the famous west winds of the Trumer Lakes, to the picture-perfect Zeller See, nestled in the midst of the mountains with views of the Kitzsteinhorn.
Sailing and surfing classes are offered at all the bigger lakes.
Kayaking, Rafting, Canyoning
If you are in search of adventure, then the crystal-clear streams and rivers of the SalzburgerLand have just what you’re looking for. Torrential mountain rivers, steep ravines amid a unique alpine world, the magical tranquility out on our countless lakes – in other words, the ideal setting for kayaking, rafting tours, canyoning and recreation in the great outdoors.
