Riding the Mine Train into the Mountain

Located on the Dürrnberg near Hallein is one of the world’s oldest salt mines ever to have been opened to the public.  The salt from the Dürrnberg brought riches and prosperity to the Salzburg region, from the ancient Celts to the prince archbishops.  Salt, that inconspicuous and yet so generous gift of nature, had been lying hidden in the heart of the Dürrnberg for millions of years. Discover for yourself this mysterious world as you take a journey into the depths of Bad Dürrnberg’s Salt Worlds.

You will take a small train into the galleries of the Bad Dürrnberg salt mine. Then you’ll ride down smoothly polished slides from one level to the next, until you are in the very depths of the mountain itself.  Your mine guide will give you fantastic insights into this world below ground.  Together with your group and still below ground, you will cross the former border with Germany.  Floating on a raft, you will glide across a subterranean salt lake.  An unforgettable journey to the center of the mountain.
