Postalm Road, Abtenau - Strobl
Extended Hikes on the Postalm
One of the most frequent questions we hear is with regards to the origin of the name “Postalm”. Well, when Bad Ischl was still the summer residence of Austria’s emperors, there used to be an important post halt there with many post coaches and a large number of horses. In summer, many of these horses were brought up to this area (known in German as an “Alm”) to graze during the summer months, eventually becoming known, logically enough, as the “Postalm”. During the era of intensive salt-mining, the area of high pastures surrounding the original Postalm was expanded even more, as trees were cleared to provide wood for support beams. Nowadays, this whole area, encompassing the Lienbachalm, Einbergalm, Wiesleralm, Thoralm, Pitschenbergalm ..etc., is known collectively as the "Postalm".
